Paranormal Assistant Volunteer Role Description

Place of Volunteering: Fort Amherst, Dock Road, Chatham, Kent ME4 4UB

Reporting to: Volunteer Co-Ordinator

Responsible for: Assisting with the operation of paranormal evenings held at Fort Amherst

Role profile: Working as a member if the paranormal team you will have an active interest in things that go “bump in the night”. The role gives you a perfect opportunity to increase your skills and awareness whilst offering a fantastic evening out for our visitors.  The paranormal team is a small group with all members understandably sharing similar interests and is therefore a great opportunity to meet people of a similar mind frame.

Working hours: Paranormal evenings are usually held once / twice a month and run from 20.00 – 04.00. As such to greet guests and ensure the evening runs smoothly you would be needed on site by 19.00 at the latest.

General Tasks:

These include:

- Ensuring that prior to the event the areas being used are suitable for members of the public to access.

- Signing volunteers and visitors in and out as appropriate.

- Leading the members of the public in a polite and courteous manner.

- Following Health and Safety guidance and informing the Volunteer Co-Ordinator should there be any cause for concern or incident during the event.

- Ensuring that any equipment that you have used is returned in the same condition that it was issued.

- Assisting the Volunteer Co-Ordinator in leading teams of differing ages, abilities and sizes.

You will need to be able to:

- Work late at night, in low lighting levels or the dark.

- Deal with the visitors in a polite and courteous manner.

- Ensure that all areas within the Fort are left in a clean and tidy manner after the event.

Appearance Guidelines: As Fort Amherst is a visitor attraction and a public park, you will be expected to wear appropriate clothing at all times so as to maintain a professional image. Further details of the clothing policy can be found within the volunteer guidelines As this role involves work both outside and inside buildings that may not have electricity or heating it is important to dress appropriately for the weather conditions and the tasks being completed

Conduct Guidelines: As Fort Amherst is a visitor attraction and a public park, it is important that we portray a professional image.  Swearing, offensive language or behaviour of any type will not be tolerated and will lead to disciplinary action being taken. In your role you may be approached by a member of public with questions about the Fort and its history. If this happens please assist them as much as possible, in a polite manner.  Should you not know the answer to the visitor’s question please ask another team member.

Legal Requirement: Should you be responsible for a team of people at Fort Amherst you may require an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Check.  This will be arranged and paid for by Fort Amherst Heritage Trust. Should you have any concerns regarding this check please speak with the Volunteer Supervisor first before the CRB request is submitted.

Training & Development: Due to the specialist nature of this position there will be regular training opportunities with the Paranormal Team Leaders.
