Wassailing is an ancient custom that is rarely performed today. The word 'wassail' comes from the Anglo-Saxon phrase 'waes hael', which means 'good health'.

Join us on the evening of the 9th January 2016 as we bring this tradition back at Fort Amherst for the second year. We will be performing the Wassailing ritual, toasting the apple trees with Cider on the Belvedere Lawn, complete with traditional Morris dancing and the firing of cannons and muskets to ward off evil spirits. We will then retire to the underground tunnels for an evening of Kentish Mummers Plays adapted for Chatham, with storytelling and folk music by Kentish Band Larkspur.

There will be a bar and hot food available. Come and join in the ancient merriment.

There is a total capacity of 150 tickets - £6 for adults and £3 for children (children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult). Places should be booked in advance as they are limited, and last year’s event was very popular!

Please note: A modest booking fee applies. Once purchased, tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded.

PARKING WILL NOT be available at the Fort, but can be found at the Brook, the Library, Pentagon Centre and Gun Wharf – all are within a short walk of the Fort.

To book tickets please click HERE.

If any tickets remain, they will be sold on the door for an additional £1.
