Special Events

Fort Amherst are pleased to announce that after the huge success of our first ever Wine Tasting Event, we are delighted to be able to follow this up with ‘Discovery’ Wine Tasting in our Grand Magazine building.

If you've ever wondered why you like a wine or a particular food & wine pairing while your friend or other half doesn't, then this tasting is for you. We'll show you a simple way to understand how food and wine can or can't be matched and help you discover the reasons why you may like a red wine with a curry, while your friend prefers a medium sweet white!

Using the latest research find out about your own genes and how they drive your personal preferences in food and wine, whether you have a sweet tooth, even how much salt you like, and how to use this to get the best combinations.

Also included in the price is a 45 minute tunnel tour, starting sharp at 6.00 p.m. led by one of our experienced and entertaining guides as you make your way through the candle lit Tunnel Complex to the Grand Magazine for the tasting (be warned there are several flights of stairs to negotiate in the Tunnel Complex!)

There are only 30 places available so book your tickets online as soon as you can to avoid disappointment as the last event sold out 3 weeks before the closing date! There will be no tickets sold on the night, only prior booked tickets online available.

To book your tickets, please click HERE.

* If travelling to the Fort by car why not leave it overnight in our locked car park, grab a taxi home and pick it up the following day (we accept no responsibility for any loss of damage that may occur while your car is in our car park).

** Please bear in mind the tunnel floors are uneven so wear sturdy shoes and bring a coat with you as the Grand Magazine building is unheated.

*** Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferrable (unless cancelled by Fort Amherst).

Outside, there will be a number of telescopes placed on top of the Grand Magazine enabling solar observing (looking safely at the Sun as you have never seen it before to observe spots on it, flares and the surface changing), lunar observing (to see the Moon with Mountains, Seas, Craters and the Terminator), and space observing (to view Stars, Galaxies, Nebulae and the Constellations). This will all be overseen by the Mid-Kent Astronomical Society (www.midkentastro.org.uk).

Light refreshments including sandwiches, crisps and hot and cold drinks will be available for purchase throughout the event.

Wassailing is an ancient custom that is rarely performed today. The word 'wassail' comes from the Anglo-Saxon phrase 'waes hael', which means 'good health'.

Join us from 6.30pm until 9.00pm on the 7th January 2017 as we bring this tradition back at Fort Amherst for the third consecutive year!

We will be performing the Wassailing ritual and toasting the apple trees with a small glass of Cider on our Parade Ground, complete with traditional Morris dancing plus firing of cannons and muskets to ward off evil spirits. We will then retire to the underground tunnels for an evening of Kentish Mummers Plays adapted for Chatham, with storytelling and folk music by Kentish Band Larkspur.

There will also be a paid-for bar and BBQ available – so come and join in the ancient merriment!

There is a total capacity of 200 tickets - £7 for adults and £4 for children (children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult). Places should be booked in advance via our website as they are limited - get your tickets while you can as last year’s event was a sell out!

Please note: A modest booking fee applies. Once purchased, tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded.

PARKING WILL NOT be available at the Fort, apart from some limited availability for disabled blue badge holders, but can be found at the Brook, the Library, Pentagon Centre and Gun Wharf – all are within a short walk of the Fort.

To book adult tickets please click HERE, and to book children's tickets please click HERE.

If any tickets remain, they will be sold on the door for an additional £1.
